Science

In addition to the variety of science courses available at D.D.S.S. in all three disciplines (biology, chemistry and physics) at both the college and university levels, we are proud to offer students opportunities and challenges that extend beyond the classroom.

science departmentContests

Each spring senior science students are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of Provincial and National contests. These contests are sponsored by various universities and science associations to challenge students to excel beyond the classroom. Interested students should see their science teacher for more information and to sign up.

Enrichment Opportunities

These activities offer students at all levels the chance to connect classroom learning to the real world. Field trips include destinations such as Long Point, Backus Conservation Area and the Ontario Science Centre. Other events include guest speakers who have chosen career paths related to science, off-campus workshops such as “Scientifically Yours” and “Shad Valley”, and the opportunity to participate in competitive events like the annual Science Olympics challenge.

Awards

The D.D.S.S. Science department presents annual awards in recognition of highest achievement for all courses. Special awards are presented to senior science students demonstrating outstanding performance in each subject area.

At D.D.S.S. we are committed to...
Promoting Scientific Literacy
Integrating Technology
Developing Environmental Consciousness
Connecting the Classroom and the “Real World”

English

At DDSS, we offer a full range of English courses for students on all destination paths. From 1L and 2L, students progress to 3E and 4E, or take the literacy course (OLC3O or 4O) for the fourth English credit they need for their diploma. Students taking 1P and 2P progress to 3C and 4C, courses required for those planning to attend college. For those who plan to go to university, we offer the 1D-2D-3U-4U path, which also can lead to college. Other, more specialized courses are available through on-line learning.

take a tour!In our classes, our focus is on listening, speaking, reading, writing, and media studies, to improve the quality of students' use and interpretation of English. A strong grounding in English also enhances students' ability to succeed in other areas of the curriculum. In class, our teachers provide students with a wide variety of activities designed to suit their needs and to engage them in their learning, and field trips are sometimes offered to see plays at Stratford, the Shaw Festival, or Theatre Aquarius.

Co-operative Education

Cooperative Education is a experiential learning experience that integrates classroom theory and learning experiences at a workplace. While working at some of the placements the students may qualify for the OYAP ( Ontario Youth Apprentice ) program. This means that while they are doing coop and earning placement credits, a student can be registered as an apprentice so that the hours that are being earned can count toward their apprenticeship requirements.

Different types of relationships are built through the co-op department. We have a triangle relationship because of the learning settings. This relationship is between the student, the employer and the coop teacher. In this relationship the student will have to please two supervisors, the teacher and the employer.

We have students who have achieved great success in their workplaces. Some of our graduates have been hired full time, some part time and yet some of our other employers are interested in enrolling our students in an apprenticeship program.

Another positive highlight for the program is that we have had a number of students complete their co-op placements overseas. In the past few years, students from DDSS have completed their International Co op placement in Thailand, China, Indonesia and thirteen in Ecuador. Work is presently in progress to send students to Ecuador again in the near future.

As you can see there is a lot of versatility in the co-op program. Cooperative Education allows you to gain experience in a certain field, try a certain type of work, or ensures you that your career decision is one that you would like to pursue.

Business Studies

Teachers: Mr. J. Matzig and Ms M. Vogelzang

Both teachers have extensive business and community college teaching experience as well as their MBA and secondary school teaching qualifications.

Program Overview:

The business studies program offers a variety of courses in grades 9 to 12. The specific courses offered in any given year depends upon the student course selection process when they are making out option sheets.

Students can choose courses from four subject areas: information technology, accounting, entrepreneurial studies and marketing. In accounting and marketing courses, students will learn the fundamental concepts and acquire the key skills associated with these areas. Segments of the accounting course are utilizing current ACCPAC Simply Accounting software. Courses in entrepreneurship teach students how to create and operate a small business and how to develop and apply enterprising skills as employees. Students who choose courses in information technology will develop skills in applying current technological tools to business activities and learn how business is affected by the dynamic technological changes taking place today. One of the many technological developments explored in this segment is HTML and the creation of Web Pages.

The business studies program, at D.D.S.S., will enable students to select a personal package that will suit their personal interests and prepare them for further study or employment in the field of their choosing in addition to providing students with a foundation for making effective choices and good decisions.

family studiesFamily Studies

The Family Studies Department at DDSS is an active place. We try to give students the opportunity for hands-on experiences to apply their classroom learning. Students are always busy whether it be withing the various modules of HIF1O where we might cook or sew, the weekly food labs in HFN2O, tthe weekly visits with our Grade 1 buddies at Delhi Public School in HPW3C, sewing and designing in HNC3O or HNB4O, or working on decorating projects in HLS 3O. Our motto is "Family Studies: A Credit in life , about life, for life". Don't leave school without it!
